Argentina soccer match relocated from Chicago amid Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Argentina vs. Puerto Rico Match Relocated from Chicago to Florida Amid Immigration Crackdown
A friendly soccer match between Argentina and Puerto Rico, originally set to take place next week in Chicago, has been relocated to Florida due to the city’s ongoing immigration crackdown, a person familiar with the matter told the Associated Press on Wednesday.
The game was initially scheduled for 13 October at Soldier Field in Chicago but will now be held at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, the home ground of both Inter Miami and Argentine star Lionel Messi.
An executive from the Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed the venue change to the AP, citing the “situation in Chicago,” where Donald Trump has reportedly deployed National Guard troops to suppress protests against intensified immigration enforcement.
Since the start of the crackdown last month, over 1,000 immigrants have been detained in the Chicago area. The Trump administration has pledged to use federal and military resources to accelerate deportations as part of its immigration agenda.
Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, are also scheduled to face Venezuela in another friendly this Friday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Messi has been called up for both matches, which serve as part of Argentina’s preparation for the 2026 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada from 11 June to 19 July.
